Delicious Scotch Coffee: Gaelic Cousin to Irish Whiskey
Ah, a scotch coffee please! No...I did not say an Irish coffee, I said a Scotch coffee. Is there really a difference between the two? A simple answer is yes but in reality they are not too different. At a basic level, a scotch coffee uses well...a scotch versus a traditional Irish whiskey like Jameson. The more important question, is what do I mix my scotch coffee with? Does a more expensive scotch improve the cocktail? Or is the quality of the scotch relatively irrelevant when mixed with brown sugar and a strong coffee?
My favorite Scotch Whisky to Pair in a Scotch Coffee
When looking to pair the perfect scotch in a scotch coffee, it's probably first important to decide what type of Scotch that you like. Do you like a more peaty scotch or do you prefer a scotch that's a little more oaky say similar to a McCallan. Also, I feel it's my duty to warn against using a high quality scotch in a scotch coffee. The best scotch is meant to be enjoyed with sifter and maybe a little bit of water. I'd suggest using your cheaper varieties of scotch unless you want a red haired kilted man running after you in your dreams.
Glenfiddich 15
Our first suggestion is a Glenfiddich 15, it's more affordable on the price end. It has has that famous earthy or peaty flavor that you look for in a more traditional scotch. Some people dislike earthy scotches...I however am not one and prefer them in my coffee.
Bowmore 12
The Bowmore 12 scotch falls more closely in line with an Oaky flavored scotch. I find the oakyness combined with a strong black coffee and a bit of brown sugar and a touch of milk makes for a delicious combo. Bowmore is relatively approachable as well. Stick to either one of these two scotch whisky.
What Coffee should I use for my Scotch Coffee?
I'm a big believer in fresh coffee and even enjoy grinding my own beans. There's something about the ritual of waiting for the boiling water to warm the beans that brings me joy. And to mix the joy of whisky with the joy of coffee...is quite a special treat. I like to prep my espresso in a moka pot for a deep rich flavor.
Illy Classico
Sometimes it's best to just keep it simple. Illy is a classic and is relatively cheap to procure. Click here to purchase.
Lavazza Top Class
I also enjoy Lavazza if you want a more premium bean. A little bit bolder of a blend.

What's the Difference between A Scotch Coffee and an Irish Coffee?
The true difference as a I mentioned above...is quite small. A different kind of whisky and also, I don't normally associate whipped cream with an irish coffee. To me an irish coffee is just black coffee mixed with some irish whiskey. Also historically, 'Scotch Coffee' had nothing to do with whisky or coffee.I love this cocktail and if you are you're own bartender then you will have no problem making this.
