Harry's Bar Venezia: An Icon
Harry's Bar, Venice. Three iconic words paired together that define the elevated cocktail experience. As walk into the unassuming doors, you're greeted by the beautiful walnut furniture, the service impeccably dressed, and a cocktail culture that mixologists could only dream of. Harry's Bar only serves cocktails, no wine...no beer. Famous for inventing not only the Bellini but also carpaccio. There a few places in the world that drip with not only nostalgia for a time long past but that maintain a culture despite its enormous success. There's always a worry that a cocktail bar as iconic as Harry's Bar won't live up to expectations, but I'm happy to say it does. No cameras or phones allowed...but I managed to sneak a few pictures of the cocktails.
Brief History of Harry's Bar, Venezia (Venice)
Harry's Bar in Venice was opened by Giuseppe Cipriani on May 13, 1931. The bar’s name and founding were inspired by Harry Pickering, a young American who frequented the Hotel Europa where Cipriani worked. In 1928, Pickering, financially cut off by his family due to his drinking habits, was lent 10,000 lire by Cipriani. Two years later, Pickering returned, repaid the loan, and gave Cipriani an additional 40,000 lire to open a bar, which was named Harry's Bar in his honor.
What Cocktails to order at Harry's Bar
The Bellini
Perhaps the most famous blend of prosecco and fruit juice of all time. The ultra classic bellini almost looks like a beer but in fact, it's a blend of local prosecco and processed peach puree.
Sidecar
The sidecar is another classic cocktail. A little bit of Cognac, Cointreau, and lemon make for a strong yet delicious drink.
What is the Ambiance and Atmosphere of Harry's Bar
What I personally love about it is the traveler atmosphere, almost everyone there isn't from there and that's actually okay for once. It's a different type of tourist, these are generally people who care about craft and the value of a historical site that isn't mobbed by a tour bus. It's a true national landmark and the conversations you can have with people from all over the world is special. Do a little eavesdropping and talk to the table next to you, I'm sure they're looking forward to it.
It's also nice to know that not much has changed in almost a hundred years. Famous Americans like Ernest Hemingway and Frank lloyd Wright sat in the same chairs as you do. That type of consistency is hard to find. My own great grandmother used to drink there on her long travel. The Cultural heritage and the good food make Harry's Bar Venezia a truly special place to be. Sometimes I like to wonder if my great grandmother was drinking in the same room as Gary Cooper and perhaps did they speak to each other? It's an answer I'll never know but like to day dream about.
Is Harry's Bar Worth it?
Absolutely. Simply put. Tucked away just outside of the most famous piazza in the world. A little respite from the crowds with a delicious cocktail makes it special. It's a bit expensive, so be prepared. Then again, what isn't expensive these days? It's considered a national landmark by the italian ministry. The cultural heritage created by Giuseppe Cipriani makes Harry's bar a great bar and restaurant
Is there a dress code for Harry's bar in Venice?
I'm sure there is. But nothing is strictly enforced. Although, I wouldn't try to go at night in shorts and flip flops.
Harry Pickering returned in the Same Century for the Same Award
Harry Pickering was a big fan of cocktails and inspired Giuseppe Cipriani to make Harry's a can't miss deestination.
